Safeguard the Children is a comprehensive program designed to promote a safe environment for children, youth and vulnerable adults and prevent child sexual abuse. The program was initiated in all dioceses in the United States at the direction of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). There is a Safeguard the Children Committee in each parish which helps to implement the objectives of the USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People's. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has produced an informative brochure entitle âWorking Together that provides resources on how to prevent abuse and provides information on reporting child abuse.
SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN COMMITTEE
It is mandated that every parish and/or school site in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles have an active Safeguard the Children Committee.
Our Lady of the Valley's Safeguard the Children Committee is committed im implementing the Bishops Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. If you work or volunteer in the Parish or in the School, you are required to be Virtus trained and fingerprinted. In the school, parents are requested to take Virtus training if they want to do yard duty as their service hours.
Our committee's goal is to create a safe environment for the children and young people in the church and in the school. We are formed as part of an Archdiocesan-wide effort to assist in preventing sexual abuse of children in parish school settings and at parish sponsored events. With God's love and guidance, we shall help to protect the children from any kind of abuse.
REPORTING CHILD ABUSE
It is very important that everyone should report suspected child abuse.
If ever one come across a suspected abuse, he or she must make a report to the appropriate child protection or law enforcement agency or call the Los Angeles County Child Protection Hotline at (800) 540-4000 or call Victims Assistance Ministry at (800) 355-2545 for assistance to make a report. In an emergency call 911.
